Getting to Know - Daniel Adkins - Professional Driver - Family Dollar Morehead

Daniel is married and has a 7-month old son, Remington, who favors his father. Daniel and his wife both work to make a decent living for their family. Daniel was hired on 5/10/2016.  Family Dollar is a very demanding and physical account and Daniel knows what demands are made of the driver and what it takes to be successful on this account. Daniel has expressed his interest in becoming a trainer to his Manager.  While we were unloading the trailer we talked quite a bit about how the trailers were loaded, the difficult situations they face when backing into their stores as well as attitude of the drivers and managers. At this point I asked Daniel why he wanted to become a trainer on the account and he expressed his feelings that if drivers are trained properly when they come on to the account it will not only help the new driver but the overall quality of how they perform on this account. How a driver interacts with the customers as well as his driving skills ultimately affects everyone on the account. Daniel expects to be with us for quite a while and he wants to help make sure the account is successful.  I told Daniel the good news as we were unloading, that he was in fact chosen to become one of our back up trainers and he looks forward to helping the fleet as much as he can.

Getting to Know - Toney Hamilton - Professional Driver - Chep Columbus

Toney has been with JB Hunt since January of 2014. He has been driving for over 11 years. Previous to that he was in the Army. Toney enjoys working on this account because it allows him to have plenty of home time to spend with his girlfriend and his children. I rode with him to Smuckers in Cincinnati, OH. While at the drop lot, he engaged in a conversation with the guard and it showed that Toney is very personable and has built relationships with the customers that he services. Toney plans to refer his son (who drives for a living) to apply with J.B. Hunt.

Congatulations to the Stampfer Family!!

Congratulations to Adam, Taylor, and big brother Thomas Stampfer on the birth of their daughter/sister, Caroline Elizabeth!  Caroline was born at 9:18 am on Thursday morning weighing in at 8lbs, 7 oz, and 20 inches long!  Both mom and baby are doing great!  Congrats Adam!

Leaders 301

This week we two of our managers completed their Leaders 301 Capstone Project.  John Goodwin, AM Limited, and Ryan Amuso, AM Family Dollar Rome, completed the last of their three week leaders course.  Both were given different accounts to audit and find a solution to a recurring problem.  Both did a fantastic job of identifying a problem at their respective account, assisting with putting a solution in place, and then quantifying the savings.

While this is a very challenging course, both managers were up to the challenge and did an outstanding job!  Great work John and Ryan!

Home Depot Van Buren hits 100 Days Injury Free!

To celebrate, the account bought all the drivers a 12oz sirloin steak freshly butchered from a local market and grilled them up for the drivers.  Pictured below is Joe Zieroff, one of The Home Depot Van Buren’s driver trainers, teaching Austin Eckert (The 180 Day Experience Manager) how to properly grill a steak.

After Austin was properly trained in grilling steak by one of The Home Depot’s Professional Driver Trainers, he got back to the basics and started properly seasoning the steak while the trainer is observing Austin’s progress so that the pack of hungry drivers had some good quality steak!

The drivers were all very excited to enjoy a steak that was not from a GFS box.  Some of the drivers mentioned that they had never worked for a company that served them steak before.  Most had a great time talking with the local management while they took turns grilling for each of the drivers.  The grill ran all day and night on Tuesday and Wednesday as they made sure each driver gets to recognize our sincere appreciation for their efforts in hitting the 100-day injury free mark.  We look forward to seeing what they have in store for the 200-day mark!

Getting to Know - Bryan Turman - Professional Driver - Southern States Cloverdale

Bryan has been driving CMVs for 10 years now. He started his career with Werner and then spent 9.5 years with UPS freight before acquisitioning to JB Hunt for the Southern States Cloverdale account.

Bryan is very conscious about his fitness. He has some 5 and 10 lbs dumbells in his truck. He also like to go for a quick jog every morning before his pretrip. He likes to make sure he drinks plenty of water and really enjoys the vitamin and flavor add in packets.

Bryan lives pretty close to Charlotte and the recent riots there has stirred up some defense initiatives in Bryan. He owns several different firearms now and like to target practice on his off time.

His family is his only other priority. He enjoys spending time with them, especially his Uncle. He thinks his Uncle is a conspiracy theorist, but likes to learn skills and talk guns with his Uncle.

Happy Anniversary Austin Eckertt!

Congratulations Austin Eckert on your one year anniversary! Since Austin's first day with the J.B. Hunt family, and more specifically Home Depot - Van Buren, I can honestly say that he has become an integral part of our operation. Inside and out, from night shift to swing shift to early morning shift to 180 Day Experience and now to backup Logistics Coordinator. It's difficult to find someone that has seasoned qualities like dedication, ownership, respect, and leadership. And yet, we found it in Austin.

Austin, if there ever comes a day, when you leave for bigger and better, just remember we have Zach Brewington to track you down.

Thanks Austin for an outstanding year!

Getting to Know - Thomas Weaver - Professional Driver - Family Dollar Morehead

Tom has been on the Family Dollar account for just over a year after transferring here from the Goodyear account. His can do attitude and friendly nature immediately made Tom a driver we could rely on. Throughout his time here we have never received any negative feedback and after hanging out with him and helping him unload it became obvious why that was. Tom is very polite with the customer and keeps up a consistent unloading pace. After the unload I had a chance to speak to the customer and he gave a glowing review of how it went, directly mentioning how polite Tom was.

Outside of work Tom enjoys getting out on the water and fishing. He has fishing licenses in multiple states and when he retires he plans to go on a huge fishing trip. He is married with three sons. All of his children have their own careers but still visit regularly.

I had the privilege to join Mr. Pratt on his Monday route to Lexington, KY. Dean has been with the Family Dollar account for almost 10 years and due to his reliability and consistency he has become a cornerstone of the account. Dean is one of the most outstanding drivers we have on the account by never getting log points, critical events or having any incidents. He is the perfect example of a Professional Driver.

On another note Dean is a very family oriented guy. Having one daughter and one grandchild they are the light of his world. He tries to spend as much time with them as possible in every free chance he gets. That is why he enjoys working for this account because of the home time provided to him.

Getting to Know - Larry Buss - Professional Driver - Aurora Parts

This is my second ride along with Larry.  This time we went on the daily Chicago Milk Run from Aurora parts in Lebanon, IN.  We started the day at 0530 and drove up I-65 as all the stops were in the south side of Chicago or the close south Chicago suburbs.  We did encounter all types of traffic including the dreaded rush hour on the Dan Ryan, while I did not hear his Bendex unit make a sound as he was really working hard to keep his space and get to the customers safely.

Larry displayed a great deal of skill maneuvering to each of the stops including the first stop that I had to get out of the truck to appreciate the precision of his driving.  Larry has a great relationship with all of his customers and they all did nothing but heap praise on him and let me know that the only complaint that they had was when Larry would take time off and we would send another driver to do the run.

Larry recently had his 10 year anniversary with the company and he has been with this account for nine of them.  He is also getting close to his one million safe miles that he should reach sometime next summer.  He is our driver trainer and he is also very helpful with the quarterly training and assists with unusual situations that may come up.  I appreciate his professionalism and wish him nothing but the best moving forward.

Mike Green, Operations Supervisor

Getting to Know - Myron Washington - Professional Driver - Chep Indianapolis

Myron Washington is a local driver for our Chep Indianapolis DCS account and has been with us since January 2016.  Recently Operations Supervisor Michael Johnson rode along with Myron for the day.  Myron is a football fan who actually played Wide Receiver in college at UCA.  In his spare time Myron is a self proclaimed grill master and loves grilling out.  As for the Chep Indianapolis account Myron’s favorite part is simply being out on the road.  As for items he would change about the account he would love to eliminate some of the paperwork since there is some much of it with them doing multiple loads per day.

Happy Anniversary Chris Cortash!

Congratulations to Christ Cortash on his 3 year Anniversary (back) with J.B. Hunt. Chris is from Rochester, NY; he graduated from SUNY Brockport where he majored in Communications. He worked for J.B. Below is the write-up from the team in Van Buren:

Relationship with Customer –
Steve has an exceptional relationship with The Home Depot account. Recently Steve was asked to sit in on a roundtable consisting of Andrew Deblock, Adam Kleeh, Scott Tully, John Bayer, and other staff members of the 5120 RDC and J.B. Hunt office. During this meeting Steve had valuable input on several subjects from the new manual floor load system to delays at the guard shack. Steve did not hesitate to voice his ideas and opinions on how The Home Depot and J.B. Hunt could work together more effective and efficient.
Description of Driver of the Month –
Steve began his career with J.B. Hunt in March of 2015 after moving to Findlay, Ohio from Sandusky. Steve has four children and has been married for 29 years. During his time with J.B. Hunt Steve has been a valuable asset and a key figure in the success of the account. At this time, Steve currently holds 434,863 safe miles and has a CSA score of zero. Steve is a very dependable driver always on time and helping out with any freight that may need covered. Steve frequently volunteers his weekends to help support the account on busy Saturdays and is always willing to assist other accounts within the region who are seeking support. Specifically, Steve helped the new Kohl’s account in Findlay, Ohio with hauling freight in their opening weeks and supporting the start of their operation. Steve is a great asset to the account and is the definition of a professional driver.

Driver Appreciation at OVACO!

Out of appreciation for our JB Hunt drivers’ hard work Ohio Valley Aluminum (OVACO) includes them in their annual company picnic during Driver Appreciation Month each year.  Many of our drivers plan their week around this fun-filled event. They bring family and friends to share in the good times!

Left to Right- Sonny Roark, Nick Stevens, Tim Mattox, & Joe Trimble
This year the picnic took place at Clear Creek Park in Shelbyville, KY. The forecast called for rain, but OVACO was prepared with a myriad of tents covering the tables. OVACO grilled a tasty meal and provided good times and company for our drivers to enjoy with it. In addition to the park’s built in fun OVACO also rented a bounce house for the kids.
Left to Right- Rainy Weather, Grilling Tasty Meat, The Bounce House (for the kids of course)
Often considered the highlight of the picnic, OVACO and their affiliates pitch in and provide an impressive amount of quality gifts that are then raffled off throughout the day. When your ticket is called you step up to the wheel and spin for your prize!
Joe Trimble’s wheel-spinning prowess rewarded him with an Amazon Kindle Fire
Once again OVACO reached out and let the drivers know how much they, the customer, appreciate the hard work and dedication our JB Hunt drivers consistently show them. Thank you all!

Rick Robb has been working for J.B. Hunt for about two and a half years and does a number of jobs for the company.
