ARM Training in Louisville, KY

This week in Louisville, KY the Region's Area Risk Managers participated in additional Specialized training.   The training was a two day course covering the procedures and safety precautions of items such as flatbed strapping, Moffet usage, and Ottawa training. There were also classroom teachings to help our ARM's better grasp the content that we train our drivers on.

By the way everyone is dressed, you would think this training took place in Alaska!

Intigral Safety Blitz

Sam Marcotte and Rich Schwartz held a Safety Blitz at Intigral on Saturday (2/21).  They stressed "Getting Back To The Basics".  They had breakfast as well as went over JSA training and talked current events from a safety standpoint.  It's no surprise why this account historically achieves some of the best safety and driver turnover results around.   Great job Intigral team!

John Simmons Taking Care of Business at Armour Eckrich!

This week, our manager for our Armour Eckrich Account in Indianapolis Connie Fruchey received an email from an Armour associate commending our driver John Simmons on how well he has done.  This isn't the first compliment that we have received on John as the director for Armour-Eckrich pointed him out when he was introduced to him a few months back.

I want to COMMEND an Outstanding Associate with JB Hunt. John Simmons was an Awesome teammate this morning unloading our 20pallet truck to truck load this morning in Winchester Ky.
JB Hunt is very fortunate as is Armour Eckrich, to have people like John working with us.

Train the Trainer Class

Pictured are the trainers who attended this course and are now listed as our Certified Driver Trainers.
From left to right
Larry Buss (Aurora Parts), Laurretta Archer (Quaker Oats), Marc Eicher (Family Dollar), Jack Holloway (Family Dollar), Jeff Fredericksen (Family Dollar),  Ray Ullrich (CHEP), and Jason Harry (Family Dollar)

Our Driver Trainers are very important to the success of our business.  It is critical when onboarding new employees that they are trained in a professional, safe manner.  This past Thursday, the Tully and Tabor Regions completed a training course for their trainers.  This course not only looked to standardize the content covered during new driver training, but also dug into the best ways to get new hires to retain information, etc.  The goal of the course was to motivate and teach the training staff.  Our Certified Trainers need to be held to a higher standard.  Our goal is to get our best drivers in a position to teach others.  While we still have a ways to go, this was a step in the right direction.  In the end, the course was a success.

Trucking Statistics

Safety needs to come first in everything we do.  It is critical that we get our safety communication out to our drivers on a daily basis.  No matter how experienced a driver, everyone of them can benefit from discussion around safety.  Keeping the thoughts of being safe fresh in their minds directly impacts behavior.  As we go into the weekend I thought it would be good to throw out some Trucking Statistics.  I have provided the link to a website that gives a lot of good information.  I have highlighted just a few below:
  • What is the total cost for all the accidents in the US?Motor vehicle accident crashes cost society an estimated $4,900 per second. That’s about $30,000 in the time it took to read this fact
  • An interesting note.In 1896 there were only four cars registered in all the United States. Two of them collided with each other in St. Louis.
  • Accident projections for 2025.By the year 2025 there will be 33 million people 70 years or older in America. This segment of the population will be growing 2.5 as fast as the total population. They will make up the largest percentage of the “turning left” and “rear end” accidents. Slowly but surely Senior Citizens have developed a higher accident ratio than teenagers. (This will, in time, seriously impact the typical Senior Citizen’s pocketbook). And also, by 2025, the total costs for motor vehicle accidents in the United States will exceed 450 billion dollars.
  • Just for your information. The world’s most solitary tree is located at an oasis in the Tenere Desert in Central Africa. There’s not one other standing tree within 31 miles. In 1960, it was smashed into by a truck.
  • How many accidents are alcohol related and what days do most accidents happen?Up-to-date statistics clearly reflect that 1 out of every 5 Americans are involved in an alcohol-related car crash at some time in their lives and the day in which motor vehicle accident injuries occur most often is Saturday. Sunday is second.

Tackling Load Quality in Morehead KY

Recently we have seen many issues with the quality of loading at Family Dollar in Morehead, KY.  In the spirit of partnership, Family Dollar is listening to these issues.  They have recently started an audit process which should improve the load quality coming out of the DC.  They have also allowed us to get involved in this process and provide feedback and insights/alternatives to their processes.  While we still have a ways to go, this is a great step in the right direction and will only strengthen the JB Hunt / Family Dollar (Dollar Tree) partnership.
Depicted in these photos are AM Benjamin Hurt, OS Tia Simmons, and Family Dollar Transportation Manager Brenda Hardin.
Brenda has shown us the process and walked us through what they currently look for and how the trailers are supposed to be loaded according to their current process and guidelines.

Louisville Welcomes MasterBrand Cabinets

On Wednesday, we hosted our customer from Masterbrand Cabinets at our terminal in Louisville, KY.  The purpose of Masterbrand's visit was to see our current training setup for all of our new driving employees.  With the help of our Maintenance Team, we setup a mock trailer stocked with replica cabinets that can be used to train drivers on proper unloading procedures.  This training will ensure that all new employees are properly trained on how to down stack, tailgate, and secure our customer's product.  MasterBrand was so impressed with the concept that they wanted to come and see it in person.  Our Maintenance Team was nice enough to setup a cookout for our guests as well.  Thank you to everyone involved!

Congratulations to Mark Sills for winning January 2015 DOM!

Congratulations to Mark Sills for winning Central Region DOM for January!  Mark works on our Cargill Animal Nutrition Account in Batavia, NY.  Mark has been employed by JB Hunt since December 2007, when he transitioned over from the incumbent when we started our partnership with Cargill.  Mark is without a doubt one of our top bulk feed haulers in the region.  Whether its snow, rain, or shine, Mark is hauling feed.  Not only has he had a flawless service record, but he has had a near flawless safety record as well.  In his 7 years with the company, Mark has only had one minor collision, and that was back in 2009.  Congratulations to Mark on this very deserving award!

Happy Anniversary Jerry White!

Happy Anniversary to Jerry White who celebrates his 2 year anniversary today!  Jerry is our Account Manager at CHEP in Indianapolis, IN.  Prior to coming on to JB Hunt, Jerry worked for FedEx for almost 10 years.  Jerry began his JB Hunt Career with Final Mile Services, where he was the Account Manager over the Indianapolis LDC.  From there, Jerry moved to the Major Leagues and came over to DCS.  Jerry has seen the CHEP Indianapolis site nearly double in size over the last year.  In his spare time, Jerry enjoys spending time with his family and coaching Little League baseball.  Happy Anniversary Jerry!

Happy Anniversary Jess Caudill!

Happy One Year Anniversary to Jess Caudill!

We were very fortunate to hire Jess a year ago and over the last year has been a huge addition to the PSP team. From the very beginning we felt Jess would do extremely well with JBH and has not disappointed. Over the last year he has continued to improve the safety culture, driver turnover, and service at PSP. Not only has he impressed with his body of work, people look forward to stepping into that office because Jess will keep you entertained with his humor.

The Cup is in Louisville for 2015

Congratulations once again to Team Warchol for winning the 2015 Central Region Cup.  The trophy recently got back from being engraved and now has all team members names on it.  In addition to the engraving, the trophy shop was nice enough to wipe all the fingerprints and clean out all the debris that somehow got in the cup the night of kickoff.  The trophy is currently sitting in the Louisville Office for all to admire!

Happy Anniversary Jeremy Messing!

Congratulations to Jeremy Messing on hitting his one year service anniversary with JB Hunt!  Jeremy is originally from Clarkston, MI and a graduate of Western Michigan University.  Jeremy has spent his first year with the company servicing both Home Depot Monroe and now Home Depot Van Buren.  After starting his career as a DMIT in Monroe, Jeremy was promoted into an Operations Supervisor role.  Jeremy was recently moved to Home Depot in Van Buren, OH.  Jeremy has displayed an outstanding work ethic in his short tenure with the company.  Jeremy has been willing to work any shift and has done whatever has been needed of him ever since he started.  This was on full display on a Saturday last February when Jeremy assisted in delivering pizza supplies to some Marco's franchisees in Cincinnati from his personal vehicle.  Great job Jeremy!
