Jamestown Container acquiring H.P. Neun

A Chautauqua County firm plans to keep several H.P. Neun Co. Inc. employees after it acquires that company's Wayne County-based packaging business, according to a statement released on Wednesday.

Jamestown Container Companies, which already operates on Edwards Deming Drive in Rochester, said that the deal is expected to be completed in May. Financial terms were not disclosed.
"H.P. Neun agreed to sell our business now because we believe it is in the best interests of our customers, employees and shareholders," Stephen M. Bregande, president and chief executive officer of H.P. Neun, said in a statement. "Jamestown Container shares similar values, purpose and overall philosophy, with a well-earned reputation as a high quality manufacturer and excellent service provider."

Jamestown Container is a corrugated packaging manufacturer, supplying a variety of such custom-made items as shipping boxes, plastic and foam packaging and laminated containers to wholesale providers, in addition to other related services.
The state Department of Labor posted a notice earlier in the week that H.P Neun was planning to lay off as many as 64 workers at operations in Lyons, Wayne County, and in Seneca Falls, Seneca County, as a result of the sale.
But as part of the deal, Jamestown Container said it would retain roughly 50 workers, mainly account managers, customer service and design professionals as well as operations and distribution personnel at H.OP. Neun. Jamestown Container will operate H.P. Neun's Viva Foam business in Wayne County, with many of those workers expected to stay past the ownership transition.

Jamestown Container added that it expects to hire several new operations workers for its Rochester-based manufacturing facility.

Overall, the company employs about 350 people and has locations in upstate New York and Cleveland, Ohio. H.P. Neun, one of the state's oldest packaging companies, traces its roots back to 1880. It was once headquartered in Fairport before moving to Wayne County. It has yet to be determined if the H.P. Neun name will remain after the deal closes..
"In addition to the new job creation, we believe this acquisition stabilizes and strengthens the jobs for our current workforce," said Joseph R. Palmeri, Jamestown Container vice president and COO.  "That — combined with our relationship with our world-class Greenpac paper mill, our role as the managing partner at Niagara Sheets LLC, and the continued process improvements in all of our plants —  will enable us to enhance our products and services to our customers, support our leadership position in our markets, and strengthen our capability for future growth and expansion as opportunities arise."

Home Depot and J.B. Hunt Team to Help Flint

Casey, the Transportation Manager for Home Depot, is highly involved in her community.

Once she heard about a local school donating time and effort to provide some relief to the Flint Water Crisis, she immediately stepped up to the plate.  She reached out to the J.B. Hunt Team. From there, we worked together to help the student council in their effort to support the city of Flint, Michigan and their water troubles.

Along with a local warehouse who donated space for us to work, we were able to provide them with the equipment and transport of the water and save the school almost $1,500. The situation was that the local student council was going to “stuff a bus” from one of the district buses. The district in turn was going to charge them almost $500 per bus. In addition, the local Red Cross in Flint was unwilling to unload water that is not palletized and wrapped. This caused them to have to rent another bus for students to go all the way up and unload themselves. Due to the amount of water, they would have at least 2 if not 3 buses due to weight.

When the J.B. Hunt team heard about that, they stepped up to the plate immediately and volunteered to help.

Not only did Sam help us with the transportation, his team which included; Jeremy Messing, Austin Eckert and Beth Chapa volunteered to help us as well as some of the other office staff at RDC5120. They helped to palletize all of the water so it could be unloaded.

Overall, it was a highly successful event thanks to the team and the drivers who also helped. We loaded up roughly 20,000 pounds of water onto pallets!

Beth and Jeremy even volunteered to go pick up the pizza and deliver to the other water drop off points. You’ll see driver William Chesire helping us in the pictures and Scott Gilbert is willingly delivering the load tomorrow to the Red Cross… on a Sunday.

It’s an amazing team that you have at our building and we’re glad to have them!!

Central Farm & Garden Blitz

Bright and early Friday morning February 12, our Central Farm and Garden Management Team Andrew Vincent and Orin Schumacher, along with Area Maintenance Manager John Dodson and Area Risk Managers, Rich Schwartz and Tracy Walker, braved the extreme cold temperatures for a Maintenance/Safety Blitz.

The purpose of this was to bring attention to CSA items, by getting extra eyes on our equipment, reducing DOT violations. We were also drawing awareness to various other safety and maintenance related issues as we saw the majority of the drivers on the fleet.

As part of the blitz, Orin manned the grill cooking up some breakfast sandwiches to show appreciation to the drivers. With temps near 5 degrees, trying to keep the eggs and OJ from freezing was a challenge.

Please Help Us Welcome Eladio Yenderrozos To The DCS Central Region!

Eladio Yenderrozos was born and raised in San Juan, Puerto Rico where he met his wife, Lymari, at the age of 5 while in Kindergarten. Several years later, when he was 17 years old, he felt the call of duty and enlisted in the United States Army as an Infantryman. While in service he filled many positions such as: Rifleman, Bradley Fighting Vehicle Driver, Team Leader, Squad Leader, Operations Sergeant, and Platoon Sergeant. He deployed in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom for a total of 36 months during his 14 years of service.

After his military career was over, Eladio then searched for another career that would allow him to progress as a leader. That search attracted him to JB Hunt and a Driver Manager in Training (DMIT) role for Final Mile Services in Seattle, Washington. Eladio began as a DMIT with J.B. Hunt in April 2015. Wanting to be closer to his wife’s family, Eladio jumped on an opportunity and transferred for another DMIT position in the DCS Central Region in the Cleveland, OH area.

Eladio and his wife Lymari have two daughters (Isabella and Penelope). They love spending time together as a family. Eladio also likes to watch football in his free time and cheer for his Seattle Seahawks. Welcome to the DCS Central Region Eladio!

Central Region Driver of the Month for January - Paul Sparks

Congratulations to Paul Sparks for being selected Central Region Driver of the Month for January.  Paul has been with JB Hunt and the MasterBrand Account for 9 months where he is one of our go to drivers!  Paul also proudly served in the US Army for 20 years!  Paul has some exceptional stats, including the following:
  • No preventable collisions or incidents in 14 years of having a CDL
  • 100% On-Time Percentage
  • 100% Fuel Compliance for 12 weeks
  • 7.87 MPG Average for 12 weeks
Congratulations Paul on this outstanding achievement!

Below is the write-up from the MasterBrand Team:

“My job as a driver trainer is to make sure that everyone on my team has substantial knowledge of the account’s procedures & ensure that they feel they are having a meaningful impact on our safety performance, compliance, and overall efficiency as a team.” said MasterBrand Driver Trainer & Veteran, Paul Sparks.

After 20 years of service in the United States Army, Sparks has gone above and beyond the call of a professional driver to ensure that his team has the understanding and competency to perform their job the best way possible while also providing them a lifelong resource & relationship as a their mentor. Sparks has excelled on the MasterBrand team, his strong leadership skills, instructional experience & overall moral integrity has had a lasting impact on his driver trainees and the account as a whole.

Driver, Scot Hlad transferred to the MasterBrand team in November. On his first run with Paul the truck broke down in route to a preferred customer, a top buyer of MasterBrand product. Very frustrated, Scot was ready to call it quits for the day.

“Paul kept his cool; he handled everything very efficiently and communicated very well. He was very patient, and we ended up back on the road in a couple hours.” Hlad said. “I don’t know if I would’ve handled a break down as well on my first load alone. Paul is a great guy, and has been a great resource to me on this account.”

Hlad has not been Paul’s first trainee success. From 2009-2011, Sparks was a Small Arms Trainer. He was responsible for training soldiers that were to be deployed to Iraq & Afghanistan. A proud member of the 1/24th Infantry Battalion, Sparks was 1 of 20 selected to train the 10th Mountain Division Special Forces, a light infantry division designed to receive intense specialized training for fighting in mountainous and arctic conditions.

Paul’s first driving job was with the United States Army, moving ammunition on base and received his 10,000 mile safe driving award on base. Paul has been driving for 14 years and has never had a preventable accident or ticket. He takes a great deal of pride in his work and his safety performance.

“I learned the SMITH System keys when I had my first driving job outside of the Army. I believe these keys should be used in and out of the truck.” Sparks said. “If I could make every driver on the road follow the SMITH System the roadways would be much safer. There is no need to take unnecessary risks by being in a hurry or not paying attention.”

Known for his dedication to progress, Sparks has been called upon by the MasterBrand Customer to evaluate the trailer loading process. The team has had a number of issues with out of sequence product. Paul led a trailer audit with MasterBrand Management to analyze the potential safety issues as well as efficiency problems encountered by the drivers every day. Paul successfully identified issues in the MasterBrand loading practices and made valid suggestions to mitigate these issues.

In a time of great need on the MasterBrand Huntingburg Fleet, Sparks was called upon to take over another driver’s position as he underwent surgery causing him to be disabled for multiple months. Sparks was asked to learn a new job in a matter of days using unique equipment. Without protest, he took over.

We were nervous about the “change in guard,” of J.B. Hunt drivers; however we saw no routine change and continued to receive top notch customer service. Paul was a delight! ” said Zella Bissey, Receiving Warehouse Manager.

In 2015, MasterBrand requested a J.B. Hunt delivery audit in the Baltimore Region. Unknowingly, Spark’s deliveries had been selected. An audit that began poorly due to the shortcomings of other drivers was turned around at the hands of Paul Sparks as he demonstrated to the MasterBrand leadership how powerful and effective dedicated service can be when employed in the right capacity. The result of the audit turned out to be an influential success for J.B. Hunt, allowing the division to continue pursuing additional work with in the MasterBrand network.

“Not only was he an exceptionally safe driver and aware of his surroundings, Paul demonstrated a notable level of professionalism.” said Regional Operations Manager, Anthony Warchol. “He proficiently communicated potential solutions instead of complaining about problems.”

Paul’s wife, Cassandra, has held down the fort on their mini-farm in Marengo, Indiana while Paul has defended his country & hauled freight for the past 21 years of marriage. Cassandra said that loving a military man or a truck driver is somewhat similar, experiencing both in her marriage. “The distance is hard, the worry is hard, the sacrifices are hard… but loving him has been the easiest thing I’ve ever done.” Cassandra said. Grateful that he is no longer in harm’s way defending our country, she still worries about him but says he is the safest driver she’s ever met, and knows that he goes out of his way to protect himself, and others on the road.
It’s easy to recognize Paul for his upstanding moral but his customer service has been noted around the country as he has made deliveries. He has been complimented by multiple customers for his service & commitment. Known for being a “southern gentleman,” Sparks has made lasting relationships with his customers.

“I always love to see Paul coming through the door! He’s so polite and always gets the job done right. If we ever have an issue with a missing product we know Paul will communicate with us if it’s found. If we could steal him for ourselves we would.” Mary, Store Manager at Sterling Kitchens said.
Paul’s leadership has driven substantial progress in our safety culture & driver efficiency. We would love to have a few more “Paul Sparks” to share with the rest of the company. It is with a touch of delight, but also tremendous pride that Team MasterBrand is represented & lead by this diamond of a driver. We would like to thank Paul for his outstanding performance and commitment to team development. We truly enjoy working with this distinguished driver who believes that nothing is more important than concrete training because the safety of others and the future of the account relies on the quality of instruction.

Thank you for unsurpassed dedication to our Country and Account!

Soft Lite - Backing Blitz

We recently conducted a backing blitz at the Soft-Lite Windows account in Streetsboro, OH.

We have seen too many stationary object strikes at the account so the goal was to create a close quarters backing training with simulated dumpsters, $90,000 Ferrari's, and snow banks to make sure our drivers understood  G.O.A.L. and how to use it to get the big picture.

Overall, we had a great turnout with some really good conversations. Special thanks to Tracy Walker, Terry Galyon, John Dodson, Mike Varty, and Sue Mateo for helping Rich Schwartz put this together.

The NEW Family Dollar - Morehead

Family Dollar Morehead has a new outlook and new people. We are all new to our positions, some of us brand new to JB Hunt. The atmosphere feels like a new Account Startup. With that being said we thought the best places to start with would be our Driver Trainers. On Sunday Jan. 31st we held a JB Hunt Driver Mentor Refresher Course. Attendees of the class:

Dustin Hatfield - Trainer
Anthony Warchol - Operations Manager
Rhonda Thacker - Account Manager
Ashley Haney - Operations Supervisor
Greg Thomas - Senior Driver Trainer
Jeff Mullins Sr. - Senior Driver Trainer
Robert Hines - Senior Driver Trainer

Family Dollar was gracious enough to let us use one of their training rooms equipped with a projector to enhance our training. Our day began around 8:30 am with donuts and drinks.

Training started at 9:00 am.  Being a refresher course for the Trainers, it was a learning experience for some of the office personnel. Dustin had spiral bound books made that will serve as a very useful tool for trainers and managers. Dustin had the agenda mapped out in the books.

The first half of our training consisted of an introduction to JB Hunt. With videos showing John and Jonelle, we learned about the dreams and reality of the birth of JB Hunt Inc. We talked about the standards for our Driver Mentors and driver trainee minimums.

From there we covered JBH policy standards and CSA. Our trainers are proud men who take pride in what they do. The offered suggestions and listened to advice from Dustin. We saw Safety Direct videos, JSA's and talked about Pre-Trip Inspections.

For lunch, Anthony picked up Subway. After a brief lunch break we were back to the grind. The 2nd half of our training consisted of Smith System, Shifting, Turns and Intersections and Close Quarter Maneuvers.

The last sections of training we went over were HOS, Maintenance PeopleNet. We ended with an overview of JB Hunt specialized services.
In all we had a great day of training. Even though it ran from 9am to 5 PM the time was spent with questions and discussions and the time flew by. I think we all learned a few new things and look forward to more training sessions like this one.
