Get to know Joe Butler

RTLA (Amanda Reyes at Toyota Owensboro)

Joe Butler received his driver training in Indianapolis.  He has been driving trucks for four years and likes his time here at J.B. Hunt DCS for the past year and a half the best.  Before he became a professional truck driver he was a mechanic.  To this day, he still loves working on any type of locomotive and bringing it back to life.  Joe decided to become a truck driver because his Dad and Grandpa both took on that special lifestyle and he wanted to give it a shot.  Country born and raised, Joe loves doing anything outside whether if it is hunting, fishing, and even watching a movie, because one day he wants to open a Drive In.  He hardly eats breakfast but loves breakfast food at anytime of the day, biscuits and gravy with smoked sausage is his favorite.  BBQ is the best type of food in his opinion.  Joe says the best thing about living in the country is that you get to see all the stars at night.  His hobbies include rebuilding transmissions and rebuilding engines.
If he had the opportunity to have a pet with him on the road... He wouldn't!

After completing his service he went on to working odd jobs which eventually lead him to truck driving. For the last 30 years Will has been proudly driving and plans on retiring in the near future in 2016.
Will is extremely personal and it is amazing to watch his interactions with our customers. He has put emphasize on knowing them and as a result has built long lasting bonds that are sure to continue for years to come!

It's the Little Things

Yesterday we had our Mid Year Business Review with our customer Falcon Packaging in Greenville, OH.  Falcon has been a customer of ours for close to three years and we have a great partnership.  This was an overall positive meeting with Falcon consistently talking about how good our service has been over the past year.  What has driven this high level of service is our improved driver retention.  In 2015, our GA site has 0 turnover and our OH site has lost just one driver.  Just being at the account it is easy to see why the turnover has been so low.  In addition to us having tenured management here, we have a customer that does there best to take care of the drivers in whatever way possible.  This includes calling receivers that traditionally hold our drivers up, or working with vendors to make sure trailing equipment is in great shape.  The other thing that stood out was the small refrigerator that our manager purchased and stocked with the drivers favorite drinks.  Not only does this allow our drivers to get a refreshment between loads, but it forces them to stop in and chat about their day and give us feedback on how we can improve the business.  For those accounts that don't have something like this in place, I challenge you to get one.  It is worth the investment.

Get to know Aaron Reed

RTLA (Rhonda Thacker at Family Dollar - Morehead, KY)

I would like to introduce you to Aaron Reed. He is one of the hardest working gentlemen that I know on this account. Aaron will call and ask us for work and he is always available when we need him. I rode with Aaron not only to see what his daily activities were but also to get to know him better. We talk to our drivers on a daily basis and it’s nice to learn a little bit about their lives outside of J.B. Hunt. Sometimes it puts more perspective on the big picture. Aaron worked as a trainer for Central Refrigerated running across 48 states before coming to J.B. Hunt.  The job provided well for his family but with limited home time. I asked Aaron how he felt about working for J.B. Hunt now and with his usual smile he said he loved his job. He said we were the best dispatchers he had worked with and he liked being home on the weekends with his wife and kids.
Aaron was married on Sept.26th, 2007. He said they were young when they got married and didn’t get to have a proper wedding, so next year for their 10th anniversary Aaron wants to re-new their vows and have the big wedding that he feels his wife deserves. Aaron has 5 children; Colin who is about to turn 1, a set of 5 yr. old twins, Austin and Daniel, Allie who is 7 and Anna who is 8. Most of our conversation was centered on our children and families. We swapped a few stories about his kids and my grand kids and I could tell by his stories that he was a good father and provider. It was nice to get to know Aaron on a more personal level.
In his spare time Aaron likes to hunt and fish, but his passion is woodworking. Aaron’s father and brother are woodworkers as well. Aaron hopes to be able to make his own kitchen cabinets when they decide to build their home. I am hoping he will bring in some pictures of his furniture and other projects so we can see them. Aaron said his Dad and brother joke with him telling him that because he is so meticulous with his woodworking it will take him at least 7 years to build the cabinets for his house!

Aaron is proud of his driving skills and has proven time and again that he is a very hard worker and exceptional driver. His drive comes from knowing that he wants to provide a good life and a good home for his family. I look forward to meeting his family when we have our Driver appreciation BBQ in September.

RTLA (Tierra Isaac at CHEP Lima)

Jeff Lynch is from Dayton, Ohio.  He has been driving for six years; three of those years with J.B. Get to know Jonathan Brown

RTLA (Sheldon Williams at Toyota Louisville)

Jonathan currently resides in Jeffersonville, IN where he takes care of his mother.  Previously, he worked as a technician/mechanic on diesel tractors before deciding that he would like to drive one to make more money.  He took a job with a local carrier and quickly was turned off due to the non-interpersonal and unfair treatment through their staff.  Fortunately, he came across his current job with J.B. Hunt on Craigslist and is pleased with his decision.  In his down time, Jonathan likes to work on cars and looks forward to more growth with J.B. Hunt.

The Thrill of a Lifetime

Meet Fin Burns. Fin is a 10 year old boy from Sandy Lake, PA. Fin LOVES big trucks and has always dreamed about seeing one up close and personal. Since Fin has Cerebral Palsy this has always been a bit of a challenge until now!

Central Farm & Garden Professional Driver and close friend of Fin's family (Terry Sanford) wanted to make this young boy's dream a reality. Terry talked to regional leadership about setting something up and we were able to put something together. On 8/7/15, Terry headed up to Fin's home town with Brian Tabor (Regional Operations Manager) to meet him. Fin immediately received a JB Hunt DCS ball cap and personalized JB Hunt t-shirt created by Terry's former supervisor at Toys R Us (Sue Mateo). Fin was all smiles as he got to get into the truck and sit behind the wheel. After several honks on the truck's horn, Fin got to take a good look at the exterior of the truck as well as the engine. The only time Fin wasn't beaming with happiness was when it was time for him to go home.

Special thanks go out to Jason and Christi Burns (Fin's parents) and Terry Sanford for pushing to set this up. It was great having Fin as an honorary member of the DCS Central Region for the day!

JB Hunt Central Region Partners with Ohio State Police

This week the Central Region spent time helping out the Ohio State Police, Franklin County Sheriff, Columbus and Dublin Police Departments in a sting targeting unsafe driving around commercial vehicles.  Franklin County has seen over 2,000 commercial vehicles collisions this year.  The idea behind this task force was to show that the increase in truck crashes is not only due to the truck drivers but the commuters unsafe actions around the commercial vehicles.
To help in this operation the Central Region provided a truck, trailer, and two very talented drivers.   We asked Travis Harris (Quaker Oats) and Jack Holloway (Family Dollar) to help us out on this event.  Our drivers drove around the Columbus, OH area with Sergeant Kelly Weakly of the Ohio State Police riding in the passenger seat of our truck.  Sergeant Weakly would observe traffic violations going on around our truck, then radio it to officers who are set up for pursuit.  The pursuit vehicle would pull over the traffic violators and give them a citation.  This action along with an airplane flying overhead pointing out other violators contributed to a successful operation.
On Tuesday the officer in our truck from 7:30 to 10:00 called out 7 violations to the pursuit officers that included unsafe lane changes, and tailgating.  On Wednesday during the same time there was 9 violations called out to the pursuit team from our truck. Amazingly Wednesday the office in the airplane called out 3 different violators that was tailgating our vehicle.  Friday being the 5th day of this sting operation only netted 1 violator seen by the officer in our truck.  Friday's results tells us the law enforcement team's efforts had a powerful impact.
It was our honor to help in this endeavor yet we gain an incite that we may of not had before this event.  In a total of seven and half hours there was twenty different dangerous and unsafe drivers around one of our trucks.  Each work day our drivers spend up to 11 hours driving and face these problems day in and day out. It is amazing how many times our drivers end their day with out any paint missing on their trucks.  This event brings to mind how much effort our drivers put into being safe on the roadways when others are not.
We would also like to thank Sergeant Weakly.  On Wednesday he spent time with the orientation class in Columbus, OH talking to the class about the goal of the task force and what was accomplished.  He also opened up his patrol vehicle and explain the equipment inside it along with demonstrations.  Friday once the truck was in the area Sergeant Weakly took Jack Holloway to the Police Academy and gave him a tour and explain what is required of the new officers.

Central Region July Driver of the Month - Earl Vandale

Congratulations to Earl Vandale for winning the Central Region Driver of the Month for July!  Earl has been with JB Hunt for two and a half years and is a driver on our Masterbrand Cabinets Account in Ferdinand, IN.  Earl's statistics and level of service have been impeccable since he has been with us.  This includes zero collisions and zero injuries on very demanding and labor intensive account!  Earl has shown the willingness to help out with whatever and whoever he can.  Congratulations Earl!

Below is the write-up from the Masterbrand Management Team:

Earl has been part of the Masterbrand team since the start up in February. Before joining JB Hunt and the Masterbrand team Earl worked for over a year as a trainer for “USA Truck”, Earl has been trucking since 1989 (26 years). In his spare time Earl enjoys spending time muddin’ around in his Jeep Wrangler that he has built to “perfection for the occasion” with his three sons and wife Pamela, Earl is also a Master Mason and a Shriner.
Earl was recently featured in the June issue of “National Truckin’ Magazine”, his article was titled “Beautiful Flaws” and was a story about his trucking career, see attached picture below. Before starting his career in transportation Earl spent four years in the US Army doing Communication Switchboard Repair work. In his short time with the Masterbrand account Leroy has not only thrived to work hard and make a name for himself but also has shown an incredible will to be a Team player and help MasterBrand, the Management Team and his customers come to appreciate the value that JB Hunt can bring to the table. In the sections below we broke out why Skip is not only the driver of the month for MasterBrand but why he should be for the Central Region as well!
National Truckin’ Magazine” June 2015

Safety: Since the start up Earl has delivered too many difficult locations all over the US. Earl has not once complained about the tight congested areas he delivers into and manages to keep from jeopardizing his and the surrounding public’s safety while doing so. Earl has been one of the instrumental reasons why this fleet is on the verge of reaching our longest Safety streaks to date, 60 days. Earl also has had multiple TEAM Inspections from different managers with everything being as clean as the 1st day he received his equipment. Across the board Earl has excelled in safety and will continue to keep it his number one priority.
Service: Service, undoubtedly the strictest measure to which MasterBrand holds us accountable has been one of the largest talking points. Service will make us be successful and grow for years to come or it will ruin this fleet and cause us to lose everything. Customers have repeatedly complimented on Earl:

Very Very Good Driver!! Best driver yet!”
“Great Service! Driver was Awesome, Super Helpful!”

Fortunately the testimony does not end there, Masterbrand has a certain set of customers known as “Preferred Customers” who carry a lot of weight within Masterbrand and we can proudly say that Earl has been a consistent driving factor to our 100% on time to Planned Delivery Date (PDD) since the start. Having someone on the fleet like Earl, who has consistently met his difficult appointment times, -on time- and has serviced our customer with a great attitude, has redeemed us from a lot of early mistakes.
In addition to Earl’s great work ethic he has not ever missed a delivery to his PDD appointment due to any fault of his own. In fact, there have been times when Earl willingly forfeited his 34 hour break at home to help our fleet out knowing that freight was tight and management needed a leader to step in and help out.

Get to know James Ford
RTLA (Daniel Tebbutt @ Marco's Pizza)

James Ford has enjoyed his stay with working at Marco’s. He has a very good relationship with his wife and kids.  He knows what it takes to be a successful driver at the account on a consistent basis and this stems from his ability to create the most efficient procedures to accomplish a given task. This starts from a pre-trip all the way to a post-trip. Live unloading product off of trailers, loading product onto dollies, and placing them in the appropriate place in the store. He was able to demonstrate the most efficient way to do the job and taught me how to, when loading dollies, use bungee cords, string up flour, and how to properly go down the side ramp when transferring a heavy weight.
