There’s no small talk with the girls at work for Kim H. No lunch with the ladies and no venting to another woman on an especially tough day. Kim is an account manager in Shelbyville, Ky., where she’s the only female on the job. It’s a plant full of hardworking men and one woman. Kim oversees the J.B. Hunt driving fleet there that delivers aluminum products. “Until they knew I was just one of them, that I wasn’t going anywhere it was different,” she said. “But I’m just like them. I wear my steel toed boots just like they do.” Kim is mom to a 20-year-old daughter and 13-year-old son and calls Kentucky home. She loves Louisville sports and says she hopes to stay, at least for a while, in beautiful horse racing country. “Where I’m at is where I want to be,” she says. And that includes being the only woman at her job. “The drivers are top notch excellent. I like working for J.B. Hunt.” She says she keeps an open door policy even going as far as to turn her office into a driver’s lounge stocked with candy, soft drinks and an open invitation to talk about drivers’ families. She says that work/life balance is the key to happiness for her drivers and herself. She describes herself as a hardworking mom but also a professional. She says J.B. Hunt allows her to put her family first when she needs to do so and that, in turn, creates a loyalty to the company she also calls family. She says women should never doubt a career in trucking if it’s what they want. “You just have to go for it,” she said. “It’s a great company to work for. Apply, get your foot in the door and work hard for your goal. Take a chance.” That chance may just lead you to the right place for you and your family.
