Delta Pilot Orders Marco's Pizza for Delayed Flight

(CNN)Diverted because of bad weather in Atlanta, a Delta Air Lines pilot and airport crew turned to the classic solution for many a grumpy passenger: pizza.  As torrential rains swept through Atlanta on Tuesday afternoon, some flights were delayed arriving at the world's busiest airport -- and Delta's home base.  Frontier pilot buys pizza for delayed passengers A 2 p.m. Delta flight from Philadelphia to Atlanta was diverted to Knoxville, Tennessee, because of the storms in Atlanta.
"We circled in the air for a while (and) then the captain said we were diverting to Knoxville because of storms over the airport in Atlanta," passenger Khoury Ashooh told the DailyMail.
Pizza delivered to the aircraft via baggage cart seemed to cheer everyone up, according to their social media posts.  "We are sitting on a runway stuck on a @Delta flight because of weather," tweeted @RileyVasquez. "So they're throwing us a pizza party!"

"Delta continues with class," tweeted @BillyTheKidWitt. "Stuck due to weather and the crew ordered everyone pizza. #deltaairlines."  The Philadelphia to Atlanta flight, which usually takes about two hours, landed three hours late at 7 p.m.  Passengers on other delayed Delta flights reported similar feasts, and it turns out that the pizza was the result of a broader edict.  "It's part of an effort company-wide when weather disrupts our operation to get food and beverages to delayed customers," Delta spokesman Morgan Durrant said.

No word as to whether coffee and Delta's famous cookies were served for dessert.  It was a bad weather day for both Delta and Atlanta's busy airport.  Delta had 106 cancellations (3% of its daily flights) and 653 flight delays (21% of its daily flights) on Tuesday, Daniel Baker, head of Flightaware.com, wrote in an email. At the Atlanta airport, "there were 173 cancellations across all airlines (mostly Delta and their regional partners) as well as 802 flight delays."  Baker applauded the use of food to handle the potentially difficult situation. "A meal can go a long way to calming nerves, and it raises the observation that there were far fewer incidents of air rage when airlines gave out food and cocktails for free!" he said.

MasterBrand Hits First Safety Milestone!

The MasterBrand Team is excited to announce the achievement of our 1st 30 day safety streak since the start up in mid February.  Drivers & Managers have all put in a lot of effort in making this goal a reality by overcoming previous expectations & habits formed prior to coming to this fleet. We certainly still have a long way to go but nevertheless we are headed in the right direction.

Going into the summer our goal is to combat the effects of heat exhaustion and fatigue. All drivers are being given a “Cooling Towel” as a gift for the 30 day Safety streak which they can use to help stay cool during the upcoming summer months.

Blowing Off Some Steam at FD Morehead

Sometimes, our safety first stance and being driver dedicated can conflict with the demands of our customers.

If service issues do occur, this can cause some frustrations to customers.

In addition to this, Family Dollar gave us one of their employees (Rhonda Thacker) whom has done a great job for us over the past 13 months with JB Hunt.

Brenda Hardin and Anthony Warchol had much discussion around this. Brenda was ok with this move, but she also had some frustrations internally with replacing her.

Anthony's idea was to offer her a dart board with his face on it, so that she can release those frustrations.

Of course, it has arrived (not yet mounted on the wall) and the management team here had to have some fun with it as well!

-Ben Hurt

Soft-Lite Windows Driver Appreciation Cookout

On Friday May 8th 2015, JB Hunt held a cookout to thank all the drivers for their hard work so far this year at the Soft-Lite Windows Account.  We also invited all drivers to bring their families so that their children and grandchildren could see where dad/granddad worked.
We had cornhole set up, a chili cook off among the drivers and prizes & contests for the kids.   This included a guess of how many pieces of candy were in a jar and who ever guessed the closest won. The drivers all enjoyed being able to talk to each other and hang out.   At this account, it is very difficult for the drivers to meet all there co-workers as everyone leaves at different times and can be gone all week.  It was fun seeing drivers meeting everyone and being able to swap stories about different places they deliver and having a fun time.   We would also like to thank our ARM Rich Schwartz for judging the chili cook off.
Finally, we took the time to thank Robert "Shoe" Scheitrumpf who has been with JB hunt since May of 2012. He will be retiring from our company on May 16th 2015.   We gave him a cake, a sweatshirt and a card signed by everyone at the account!

Did Somebody Say PrimeSource?

Get to Know Howard Dillard

Area Risk Manager Tracy Walker completed a RATLA recently with Howard Dillard.  Howard is a driver on our Central Farm and Garden Account in Wooster, OH.  Howard is from New London, OH and has been with JB Hunt since January 2014.

Below is the write-up from Tracy Walker:

Howard is a 20 year veteran of the road.  He started driving in 1995 with a Class B CDL, and then a few years later obtained his Class A CDL.  He basically is self taught as his employer at the time gave him a route to deliver almost immediately after getting his Class A.  He’s been married 30 years to his wife Nola.  They have 4 grown children ranging in age from 25 – 20 yrs old.  His time to relax includes doing some lawn care and fishing is possible.  Prior to getting behind the wheel, Howard was a restaurant manager for 13 years in Shaker Heights, OH and served the BEST corned beef in the area. He states his years in the restaurant provided experience handing customers and understanding how to deal with difficult situations.  He is very professional and patient both with customers at the delivery and those he shares the road with daily.  I was joking with Howard telling him he makes a great tour guide as our Navigo took us on an interesting route through Amish country in North Central Ohio on some back roads. He always carries a map which helps get around these difficult routes.

Howard started his JB Hunt career with our Intermodal Division and was looking for a local position.  He’s been very happy since transferring to DCS Central Farm and Garden which gets him home most every night.

Get to Know Chris Grupe

This note came to me from Regional Operations Manager Scott Tully and I thought it was a good one to share.  For us to achieve the success we all want to achieve it is critical for us to know our employees and establish relationships.  Thanks for sharing Scott!

I was looking through the Driver of the Month nominations and a picture caught my eye and made me think. The driver pictured here is Chris Grupe and works for us at Pet Supplies Plus. As you open this picture step back and think about the moment this picture was taken. Was it taken as he took off which was the last time he would see his family for a week? Was it a moment of joy as daddy got home and the family was back together?

We all have more to our lives than our jobs and our drivers are not any different. The fact is, the vast majority of them are gone from their families for multiple days which can wear on someone whether it's the driver or their family. I encourage you all to get to know every single story of your drivers so you can see what motivates them. I think that you will be fascinated by what you find out not only about them but also yourself. I will close with this, the managers that I have seen have the most success are those that know those stories.

Brandon - Thanks for knowing Kinsley's dad's story. I guarantee you Chris knows it and appreciates it.

Congratulations Don Neace for Winning Central Region Driver of the Month for April!

Congratulations to Don Neace on winning Central Region Driver of the Month for April.  Don has been with JB Hunt for 25 years, of that the last 10 years has been in Dedicated Contract Services.  Don is a driver on our Toyota Fleet out of Owensboro, KY.  Throughout his career with JB Hunt, Don has accumulated over 3.3 Million Safe Miles!

Below is the write-up from Team Toyota:

Don is by far the most professional drivers in all of JB Hunt. Don has over 3.3 Million Miles Safe driving and is rank in the top 30 for the company. Don is extremely dedicated to his profession and safety. He is one of the most dependable guys on the fleet. Whenever you need something done, you can call Don. When ever asked to help out Don never says no, he is always willing and ready to help wherever needed. Don is hard working and a joy to have on the account. With all of the experience and knowledge that he has about the industry he still has not slowed down. He continues to operate at a high level always putting safety first and striving for top results. To still be extremely humble and still have the motivation to keep operating at a high level speaks volumes about Don considering that he has driven for over 25 years, a 3 Million Mile Safe Driver, and one of the Highest Ranking Driver in all of DCS .
I honestly can't say enough great things about Don. When you meet him he leaves a lasting impression on you that you will not forget. He is courteous, professional, respectful, honorable, dependable, perfectionist, safety driven and dedicated. All of these things make Don the best candidate for April Central Region Driver of the Month!

Central Farm & Garden Customer Service Training

On Friday (4/24), our Central Farm & Garden account held it's first ever Customer Service Awareness meeting.  The goal was to help our drivers better understand our customer and their customer service needs for this relatively new operations.  The presentation was spear headed by Adam Stampfer (General Manager - Operations Compliance) and Andrew Vincent (Account Manager). Our customer was also involved in the presentation as Jerry Briggs (Central Farm & Garden - Operations Manager) talked thru just how vital Customer Service is to them.

Drivers Ed Yarber, Howard Dillard and Terry Sanford were in attendance for the meeting and everything went great.  Our drivers came away with a full understanding of what's important to our customer as well as best practices for any situation a customer throws their way!
